Postgraduate research

The diversity of our research across the broad spectrum of psychological sciences provides our postgraduate students with a rich and stimulating study environment.

We have an acclaimed national and international reputation for excellence in research, as demonstrated in the government's most recent assessment of university research in the UK. The School performed strongly, with nearly three-quarters of staff rated as internationally excellent or world leading.

Studying for an MPhil or PhD degree with us will give you the opportunity to work with internationally renowned scholars, engaged in cutting edge research.

As part of the Economic and Social Research Centre (ESRC) North West Doctoral Training Centre, our students commonly attract funding from this scheme. However, our students are also funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and other sources.

We attract both UK and international students, with around 100 students currently registered for MPhil and PhD degrees.

Samantha Hartley

"My academic PhD at Manchester not only demonstrated my ability to work at doctoral level, but also helped me to develop skills in time management, independent working, team relationships and core research skills that enabled me to stand out at application and interviews for clinical training and offered a good foundation for my continuing research work."
