Role

Within the University I work as a Lecturer in Clinical Psychology (teaching focus) to support the academic components of the Clin.Psy.D programme. This role involves giving lectures on research methodologies, especially qualitative research methods, such as Grounded Theory. I also supervise doctoral research projects for the Clin.Psy.D programme and I co-ordinate the small scale evaluation and research projects (SSERPS) for clinical psychology trainees. In terms of the academic programme I am also responsible for the co-ordination of the cognitive-behvavioural therapy teaching. I am also involved in the professional and personal development teaching and the development of the e-learning facilities on the Clin.Psy.D programme (both with Dr. Penny Bunton).

In terms of my clinical interests. I have trained in the following therapies; emotion focused therapy (EFT) with Professor Greenberg at York University, Toronto, Canada and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT)  (awaiting confirmation by the ACAT exam board). I also have an interest in dialectical behaviour therapy and the use of emotion in the treatment of eating disorders, especailly anorexia nervosa.

I am currently in conversation with the EFT community in Canada about developing a case series research study looking at the efficacy of enhanced EFT for people with anorexia nervosa. As well as my post at Manchester University, I also work for the Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal, South Manchester. Within my post as a Consultant Clincial Psychologist, I work at an inpatient/ day hospital for people with eating disorders. It is a large unit that attracts referrals from the whole of the north of England and Scotland. Through this post, I have been developing psychological therapies and supervision provision, and we now have a small hardworking team of psychologists and therapists. My own theoretical appraoches draw from CBT, DBT, CAT and EFT. I have an interest in working with people with ongoing personality difficulties, and also promoting research and development within the service. I am excited by the opportunities that working across Manchester University and the Priory Group creates, and it offers possibilities for PhD research and grant supported research.

Research

My current research interests centre around the study of emotions in psychopathology, with a particular emphasis on eating disorders. Over the last couple of years, I have published a number of papers that have looked at the role of basic emotions in eating disorders, including the application of the SPAARS (Power and Dalgleish, 2008) to eating pathology (SPAARS-ED model, Fox and Power, 2009).

The findings so far have identified that anger and disgust appear to be important and that they may function in a coupled way. This idea of coupled emotions may help to explain why people with eating disorders appear to struggle with emotions and why an increase in emotion often leads to an exerbation in eating disorder symptoms, such as marked body dissatisfaction. The SPAARS-ED model currently forms the backdrop to many of my current research projectsin this the area of eating disorders.

Another area of research that I have been undertaking concerns the relation of the self to eating disorders. This work has predominantly used qualitative methodologies to theoretically explore this relationship and understand phenomenological aspects of eating disorders, such as the 'anorexic voice' and sense of self.

Methodological Knowledge

Since qualifing as a clinical psychologist in 2002, I have developed an interest in research methodologies. As well as being trained in many uni and multi variate statistical techniques, I have an interest in qualitative methodologies, such as Grounded theory and IPA.
