Research

A central focus of my research has been the social environment and mental health, principally through the investigation of carers’ responses to schizophrenia and its influence on the course of the illness. Recent investigations at a theoretical level have included :
• study of appraisal processes in relatives/carers
• attributions of relatives/carers for patient problems, relationship of attributions to expressed emotion; influence of attributions on client outcomes.
• illness cognition in mental health and particularly illness perception in relatives/carers
• impact of negative evaluation from others on self-esteem and symptoms in psychosis

Through various collaborations, I have also been involved in studying other groups (e.g., relatives of psychosis and substance misusing clients; Alzheimer’s carers; parents of conduct disordered children; PTSD relatives; eating disorders relatives ; formal carers or staff of clients with severe mental illness) looking at common processes mediating outcomes for carers and patients.

A further key feature of my research is the development and evaluation of psychological therapies. I have been involved in trials of family/carer interventions in psychosis firstly at the efficacy then the effectiveness level . In the past 5 years I have been lead/co-lead researcher on a number of treatment RCTs:

• Family intervention in schizophrenia
• CBT for anxiety disorders in older adults
• Group CBT for maternal depression and child problems
• Group CBT for schizophrenia
• CBT for psychosis and co-morbid substance misuse

In the past few years a main stream of my work has been the development of psychological treatment approaches to people with psychosis and co-morbid substance misuse. With my collaborators within the university, we have completed the first published controlled evaluation of such treatment. Through a large multi-site Medical Research funded trial commencing in 2004, this work is currently being developed with investigations both at the theoretical and intervention level.

Biography

From qualifying in Clinical Psychology I have attempted to combine clinical practice with academic research and to that end have held both NHS and university academic posts. Since 1996 I have been Reader in Clinical Psychology at Manchester with an NHS clinical base with Pennine Care NHS trust and latterly also in Manchester. Much of my clinical research is done in collaboration with these and other trusts in the North West region.
