Speech and language therapy: PhD (part time)
The part-time PhD option is available for clinicians who want to undertake more in-depth research training than can be achieved under the one-year MPhil option, but who also want to stay working clinically for part of the week or has other commitments that prevent them from undretaking full-time study. This route will allow you to carry out, under supervision, an original piece of clinical research. At the end of the PhD, you will have experienced wider research methods training. The University of Manchester has an excellent reputation for PhD completion rates and high-quality research publications arising from them.
What to do next
As in all research training, it is important to establish who you would like to receive primary research training from and the choice of supervisor is important. To help you decide who to contact for an initial discussion, see the list of potential supervisors and their research interests.
Funding
A number of funding bodies who can finance PhD students are available. Generally, studentships that arise from government funding do not pay students the sort of working salary to which they may have been accustomed. There are other options, including other non-statutory and charitable sources that provide clinical salary stipends. Potential supervisors can advise on these and assist you in the application process.
