Speech and language therapy: MPhil (part time)
The part-time MPhil is a good option if you want to:
- Learn about research that applies to your specific clinical area
- Stay working, clinically, for part of your week
The part-time MPhil is completed over two calendar years and students tend to spend up to half of their working week on this research study.
What to do next
If you either:
- Already know what research questions to answer in your MPhil but are unsure of how to go about it
- Want to research, at greater depth, something you already have a lot of practical experience in
The first step in choosing this option is to find and make contact with the correct supervisor for you. For a list of all potential supervisors and their areas of interest, see: CNLD: Research group members. Contact your preferred potential supervisor to discuss your ideas. They will help you to complete the application form and suggest sources of funding to assist you and your employer to free up time for study.
As part of this option, you may choose to undertake certain taught courses as required (eg, a refresher in statistics) but the main body of work will be in:
- Generating a research idea
- Looking at the literature around that
- Working out a plan of action to tackle the research question
- Collecting the data
- Analysing it and writing up your conclusions
Many MPhil students continue on to publish their work in peer-reviewed academic journals and to present their results at conferences and workshops. Some NHS trusts are also able to provide secondment opportunities to enable their staff to undertake part-time study opportunities.
