Applying for funding

Applicants can apply for a studentship from one of the research council schemes (ESRC, ESRC/MRC and MRC). There are also at least five school bursaries which cover the cost of fees and provide a stipend that contributes towards living costs (similar to the research councils). Both the research council schemes and the school bursaries are highly competitive so applicants should think ahead and leave plenty of time to work on their applications. It is essential that students work on this together with their potential supervisor.

In some cases students may not need to apply for funding. It is possible to study for a PhD part time at the same time as working, or to self fund. Financial assistance is also offered by some charities.
