North West Doctoral Training Centre: funding application procedure
Before submission
Applicants are encouraged to discuss potential research proposals with suitable academic supervisors in advance. This will provide the basis for establishing whether a proposal can be supported, relevancy to ESRC and how it could be adapted to make the training experience all the more fulfilling. A summary of our research groups and academic profiles can be found here as a starting point:
Research proposals are expected to name a minimum of two potential academic supervisors.
General advice on research proposal suitability and potential academic supervisors can be obtained by contacting the ESRC NWDTC lead for the School, Professor Kevin Munro (kevin.munro@manchester.ac.uk).
Applicants seeking 1+3 places can select an appropriate MSc/MRes from any of the NWDTC partner institutions. A summary of suitable Masters training available within the School of Psychological Sciences can be found here:
Information on postgraduate training opportunities within the our NWDTC partner institutions can be found at:

Deadline: 27 January 2012.
Final application
Following the deadline, if your application is to be supported you can expect to be contacted by the proposed supervisory team for the PhD. In partnership, you will then complete an ESRC NWDTC – Psychology Training Pathway application form, providing further detail on the training being proposed. This application form should only be completed once you have received confirmed support from your proposed supervisors (and the relevant MSc/MRes Programme Director for applicants seeking 1+3 funding).
The deadline for completed applications: 15 February 2012. Candidates will then be shortlisted with interviews taking place week commencing 27 February 2012. As a result of this, the most outstanding psychology candidates across the NWDTC partner institutions will be recommended for studentships, with final confirmation of places to be confirmed in April 2012.
Applicants should refer to the guidance notes below which provide full details on the scheme criteria, application process and deadlines.
