Make a referral
How to make a referral
- Please contact your local research team
- If you are not sure if someone has an at-risk mental state, please contact your local research team anyway, and we can make that decision with the information you can provide
- Upon referral clients will be assessed by a member of our team to see if our project is suitable to meet the individual’s needs
- If EDIE 2 is suitable to meet their needs they will be allocated to a Monitoring group or a Monitoring plus Cognitive Therapy group
- Referrers will be made aware of the outcome of assessment and we will keep in touch with referrers over the course of the trial
- If our trial is not considered to be the most suitable we will either refer the client back to their GP or assist them to find appropriate help from other services
How to explain the trial to potential participants
- When we talk to referrers about the trial, many ask us how to approach the topic with a potential participant.
- What we found has worked best is for the referrer to contact the EDIE 2 team to discuss the difficulties the person is having before approaching them. We can then clarify if we think the trial is suitable for the person. If it is, we then suggest that referrers talk the person about the difficulties they are having, using similar language to that of the person.
- We then suggest that you mention EDIE 2 and that it is a research project which may be helpful to them and possibly prevent their problems from getting worse.
- Don’t forget to mention it is voluntary and they can change their mind at any time.
- We have found that just the monitoring alone can be beneficial to people so it may be worth mentioning this also.
What happens after a referral is made?
The research assistant will:
- Discuss the referral with the referrer, specifically what kinds of experiences the individual is having and other pertinent issues
- Go through the criteria with the referrer
- Contact the individual directly (if appropriate) and offer an appointment at:
- Venue of their choice
- Time of their choice
- Determine whether the trial is suitable for the person
- Re-assess suitability after two to four weeks
The individual will be randomly allocated to either:
- Monitoring
- Monitoring plus Cognitive Therapy
