What is an "at-risk mental state"?

Groups

Three different groups of those with an at-risk mental state:
  1. State plus trait
    • Individuals with an immediate relative who has a psychotic disorder
    • AND having a recent deterioration in their ability to cope as may be seen through behavioural or emotional changes or chronic low functioning
  2. Attenuated symptoms
    • Changes in thoughts or emotions, e.g. hearing voices or seeing things. Changes in perception of objects (things looking or sounding different) or misinterpretation of events (feeling slightly suspicious about others at times, odd beliefs, magical thinking).
    • These should have been present for the past year
  3. Brief, limited, intermittent psychotic symptoms (BLIPS)
    • Severe changes in thoughts or emotions, e.g. hearing voices or seeing things. Severe changes in perception of objects (things looking or sounding different) or strongly held unusual beliefs (feeling highly suspicious, persecuted or special).
    • These should have lasted for less than 1 week and have resolved without anti-psychotic medication
