Common life experiences of "at risk" individuals
- Trauma and abuse experiences, bullying, assault
- Homelessness, children’s home, local authority care
- Urban living (increased prevalence of psychotic like experiences)
- Cannabis and other illicit drug use
- Negative underlying beliefs (e.g. criticism/rejection from others/worrying about worrying)
Individuals do seek help prior to the onset of psychosis
- Prior to onset, on average people make 2 (range 1-4) help seeking contacts
- Depression (23%), work/school decline (14%), delusions/paranoia (10%), hallucinations (7%) are common reasons for seeking help
- Contact may be with a variety of statutory and non-statutory mental health and social care services
