School of Psychological Sciences

No stopping Faculty’s youngest professor!

April 2006

Professor Matt Lambon Ralph of the School of Psychological Sciences has attracted a five-year programme grant from the Medical Research Council and a further award from the Wellcome Trust, which will enable his group to continue its research into the semantic memory.

“Semantic memory is the knowledge we have about the world, and is central to everything we do,” he explained. “It is impaired after certain types of brain damage leading to significant disabilities, so it is critical to understand how the brain encodes this knowledge and how it can break down.”

A further award from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation will allow Matt to investigate the way the brain supports language, another source of serious disability when affected by brain damage. He has also been selected to give a BA (British Association for Scientific Advancement) Charles Darwin Award lecture in September, on the converging methods cognitive neuroscience offers for investigating the brain’s representation of concepts and meanings.
