Adrian Davis honoured

June 2007

Director of the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, Professor Adrian Davis, has been awarded an OBE for services to healthcare in the latest Queen's Birthday honours. Professor Davis has worked in healthcare for more than 30 years and, after lobbying extensively for the introduction of newborn hearing screening, led the implementation of the programme in England. He now oversees the coordination of the programme nationally.

Speaking about the announcement, he said: "I see this honour, not as a recognition of my own personal achievements in healthcare and audiology, but as a reflection of the hard work and commitment of many others. The praise must really go to those who work for, and with, the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, healthcare and support service professionals, and campaigning organisations and charities that continue to give families such essential support.

"There are also many others who have contributed their time and know-how to implement and modernise hearing aid services for adults and children. They have fundamentally changed the way hearing services operate in England. My heartfelt thanks go to them all. I am sure that over the next few years the benefits of their efforts will be seen and they will continue to inspire commitment to delivering world-class hearing services for hearing impaired people in the UK."
